Windows 10 Previewers Could Upgrade Straight to Final Version

If you’ve been enjoying the roller coaster ride of the Windows 10 Technical Preview from Microsoft, there might be some good news for you here. A post on Neowin reports that Microsoft intends on letting preview-users upgrade directly to the final version of the operating system when it’s released next year. Key word, though: “intends.”

It all started a few days ago, when a user on Twitter asked the question of Microsoft’s Gabriel Aul, who’s working on the company’s Windows Insider Program that’s managing the Technical Preview:

As the Neowin post points out, Aul’s statement that this is their “intent” is in and of itself a bit loaded. We all have lots of intentions. For instance, I intend to change out of my pajamas before 10 a.m. That rarely happens, as it’s one of the perks of working from home, but there you go. Likewise, Microsoft fully intends on giving users the ability of upgrading from the Technical Preview to the final build, but that might not happen due to any number of issues that could arise between now and then.

Oh, and when is “then” anyway? Another post on Neowin circles back around to Microsoft’s statements once again. This time it’s from Microsoft’s Kevin Turner, who elaborates on the company’s plans for this newest OS:

“The thing I want to tell you about on Windows 10 is in the Windows 10 timeframe, which we plan to talk about the end-user consumer experiences in the early spring, we’ll have a developer preview and be able to talk to that in depth in the early summer timeframe. And then by next late summer and early fall we’ll be able to bring out this particular OS. That’s the current plan of record.”

If, like me, you were going to keep using the Technical Preview until Microsoft got around to releasing the final version, the wait might be quite a while. Late summer or early fall? That’s almost a year of using an unstable OS!

That said, it’s still probably better than using Windows 8…
