Will the Samsung Galaxy S6 Have an “Edge”?
It seems fairly likely that the next flagship phone from Samsung, the Galaxy S6, will be unveiled on March 1 in Barcelona, if the leaked invites to a special event are anything to go by. But a new post on Neowin today speculates that the mysterious shape shows a partial silhouette of a smartphone sporting the same proportions of the Galaxy Note 4 Edge. The above mock-up was left as a comment on an earlier post on the site, and once you see it, it’s impossible to un-see.
The post points the way back to a redacted report at PC Pro, which reportedly offered up specs and pricing for the Galaxy S6. Here’s the breakdown, if it’s to be believed, along with current Euro-to-dollar conversions:
- Samsung Galaxy S6 32 GB: €749, £566, $859
- Samsung Galaxy S6 64 GB: €849, £640, $973
- Samsung Galaxy S6 128 GB: €949, £717, $1,088
- Samsung Galaxy S Edge 32 GB: €849, £640, $973
- Samsung Galaxy S Edge 64 GB: €949, £717, $1,088
- Samsung Galaxy S Edge 128 GB: €1049, £791, $1,203
I’d say that those prices in US dollars seem a bit high, especially if Samsung is serious about reversing its dreary mobile fortunes.
What’s most interesting, though, is the possibility of an entire line of Edged smartphones coming from Samsung. While many devices look more or less the same – whether they’re made by Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, or someone else – the Galaxy Note 4 Edge was truly unique looking. By offering an interesting and innovative method of user interface, the Galaxy S6 could break the device line’s recent sales slide.
That said, as interesting as the Edge may be, is it what users really want? Is there a demand for a new way to interact with a smartphone, but only on the spine of the device? I have my doubts, but I won’t lie: it looks cool, and it makes Samsung’s devices far more distinct than they would be otherwise.
