Will Apple Reveal new iPads on October 21?

In the weeks leading up to the big Apple event last week, where we got a look at the iPhone 6, the Apple Watch, and Apple Pay, we were under the impression that we’d see a new iPad there as well. Of course, when we didn’t, it was easy to forget, since there was more than enough to write about when it came to the new gadgets and services that Apple did bring to the stage. A new report out of the Daily Dot, however, claims that Apple will be scheduling another big event next month, where we’ll see a couple new iPads, as well as the release of OS X Yosemite.

The post cites “sources familiar with the matter” who say that Apple will hold the event on October 21, where we’ll see the sixth iteration of the iPad, and the third iteration of the iPad Mini. Earlier reports that we’ve heard indicate that the new iPad will probably be bigger than all the other versions that have come before, measuring 12.9-inches, along with a RAM upgrade to 2 GB, and the addition of Touch ID to the mix. Meanwhile, other reports say that both new iPads will sport a new anti-reflective display that ought to make reading outside in direct sunlight easier.

Also absent from last week’s event was news about OS X Yosemite, about which we first heard back at WWDC this past summer. October 21 would make sense for the new operating system’s release, especially since – as the post points out – we got OS X Mavericks and the iPad Air and new iPad Mini last year on October 22.

So is this October 21 date anything more than an educated guess? Maybe…maybe not. It took Apple a really long time to confirm the September 9 press event we just had, so it’s likely we won’t hear about this new one either way for some time. That said, given the reports we’ve gotten over the last few months, we’ll need to hear about these new iPads sometime. Why not October 21?
