Weekend Wrap-Up: Celebrity Photos are Hacked; Sony Unveils Xperia Z3
Happy Sunday, folks! Football is back, but before we get lost in all the action on the gridiron, let’s take a look at some of the big tech stories from the past week.
Ready? Let’s go.
Celebrity Photos Hacked, Released Online
The subject of cloud security went under a microscope this past week after a number of celebrities had their personal photos hacked and released online. Some of the photos contained nudity. Apple’s iCloud got a lot of attention for being a possible source, but it appears that the strategy used by the hacker was not so much a complex infiltration of cloud storage as it was a guessing game to figure out celebrity passwords. We’ll update as we learn more about the hacks.
Sony Unveils Xperia Z3
Want to take advantage of remote play on your PlayStation 4, but not with a Vita? Sony just rolled out several options that will let you take your PlayStation gaming on the go. The Xperia Z3 family of devices includes two smartphones and a compact tablet, all Android-powered and able to stream PS4 titles from your console. We don’t have any pricing or release information at this time, but we’ll get it to you when we have it.
iPad Air 2 and 128 GB iPhone 6 Coming, According to Analysts
Most feel pretty confident that we’ll see an iPhone 6 and an Apple smartwatch at the company’s event this Tuesday. But some analysts believe that we’ll see more than that. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will roll out an iPhone 6 that touts a whopping 128 GB of storage space. Kuo also believes that Apple will also unveil an iPad Air 2. We don’t have long to wait for some confirmation on these — we’re just two days away from seeing what Apple has in store for us.
New Xbox One Promotion Bundles a Game for Free
We’ve seen some pretty great Xbox One deals since the company started to fall behind Sony’s PlayStation 4. The latest deal from Microsoft lets you pick a game of your choice when you purchase an Xbox One console. The offer is good at participating retailers, though in my research, I’ve noticed that some retailers are putting their own restrictions in place. Best Buy won’t let you get the deal with a game bundle (like the one that includes Madden 15, for instance). Target won’t let you choose Destiny as the free game. Walmart appears to be offering the deal as Microsoft described it. If you want to take advantage of the deal, it’s going on from today, September 7, through September 13.
