Talking tech since 2003

Even though the Steam Machines project has been delayed by a year by Valve and its partners, that doesn’t mean we can’t still hear more news about it.

The SteamBoy, unveiled at last week’s E3 2014, the biggest annual news conference in the video game industry, is the first mobile, play on-the-go Steam Machine to be unveiled so far. It’s not, at this point at least, designed to replace your modern gaming PC or even necessarily a Steam Machine in your living room – it’s designed like a modern gaming handheld. In simple terms, it’s packing a lot of punch, allowing you to, in theory, “keep playing your faovirte games at the bus stop, the office, the school, or the doctor’s waiting room.”

SteamBoy was officially unveiled at E3 via a teaser video (below), and the team revealed to The Escapist that the portable powerhouse will house a quad-core CPU, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage memory, and 3G+Wi-Fi connectivity.

No word yet on the graphics processing tech inside, but we’ll let you know when we hear back from the SteamBoy team.

The shell itself takes clear inspiration from the recently redesigned Steam Controller that Valve is working on, but with an actual touchscreen this time.

“SteamBoy won’t be as powerful as other announced Steam Machines, in the same way [that the] Nintendo DS or PS Vita performance is not comparable to a Wii U or PlayStation 4. However, it will be possible to play the majority of current games in Steam.”

No release date or price was offered for the SteamBoy.
