Space Combat Game 'EVE: Valkyrie' Now an Exclusive Launch Title for Oculus Rift

Game developer CCP Games confirmed yesterday that its much-anticipated and technically-impressive space combat game, EVE: Valkyrie is releasing as an actual, buyable product. More specifically, it will release as an Oculus Rift exclusive at the headset’s still undetermined launch.

Does this mean you won’t be able to play EVE: Valkyrie if you’re Oculus Rift-less? That’s sure what it sounds like – but the game has never been shown without the headset, and really, was designed by the team as a virtual reality experience from the beginning.

“We strongly believe the best VR experiences are going to be the ones built from the ground up for VR, and we’ve kept that in mind whilst developing Valkyrie,” members of the EVE: Valkyrie team wrote on the Oculus’s website. This echoes Oculus founder Palmer Luckey’s thoughts on development for the Rift.

“We wanted people to really feel like they were there—to sense the vastness of space, feel the confined area of the cockpit and get that adrenaline rush as you see an exploding fighter whizz past your head.”

EVE: Valkyrie will now be co-published by Oculus, the developers of the virtual reality headset that’s taken the gaming and tech worlds by storm in the past year. There’s no official launch date or price for the headset or the game at this time, but the site says “Coming in 2014.”

This either means that the headset and game will actually launch for consumer purchase this year… or someone at CCP forgot to update the website.

We’ll be sure to update you when we hear new word on it.
