Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Mobile App Now Available for Android

One of the benefits of the Android platform is its openness and accessibility, not just for the end-user, but for the breadth of applications and marketplaces out there. But with that freedom comes risk, risk of losing important data or worse, your identity, to the more nefarious folks and programs out there.

That risk still very much exists today for a number of unprotected users.

But now, there’s Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Mobile, or MBAM Mobile for short. It’s an all-in-one security protection app for Android phones and tablets, built by the team at Malwarebytes. It’s launching today on the Android App Store, and “at a later date” through the Amazon App Store.

What Does it Do?

The Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Mobile app “guards your identity and personal data on-the-go,” and blocks and destroys “spyware, Trojans, viruses, and worms in-real time,” ensuring your most personal information is kept how you like it: personal.

What Features Does it Have?

The app has a scan scheduler that will periodically scan for viruses, malware and more whenever you tell it too. Additionally, the app automatically “updates the threat database” to help ensure that you and your data are as safe as possible.

MBAM also has a built-in privacy manager, which identifies the information that each app you own can access, so that you can change their settings or uninstall them accordingly. This can range from apps that have access to your storage, your network, your location, your calls, and much more. There’s also a related feature called Security Audit, which points out potential security vulnerabilities, such as how your lock screen is setup without a password, or how Near Field Communication (NFC) is persistently activated (which could be an issue).

There are also application-specific features that allow you to manage running and installed apps, and terminate them accordingly to conserve battery life. You can even whitelist certain applications that Malwarebytes may have marked as suspicious, so that future scans don’t throw up a red flag every time the app notices them.

Finally, the app takes a page from Apple’s playbook and implements a “Find My Phone” feature that allows you to locate, lock, or fully reset your lost or stolen device. With this feature, you can always know the location and security of your device and the important files within.

When Can I Download It?

Today. It will require you to be running at least Android 3.0 or later, but other than that, it’s ready to help you fight the world’s nastiest mobile malware. Oh, and it’s completely free.
