Lycos Is Planning A Comeback In 2013 With A New Search Engine

In a report by The Next Web published today, it appears that Lycos is planning a comeback in 2013. That’s right, one of the former search giants from the early 1990’s, is going to be releasing its own proprietary search engine in the coming year.

While the details of the search engine are currently scarce, Lycos CEO Rob Balazy did tell The Next Web that, “In the coming year you will see us introduce a new proprietary search product. I don’t want to say too much about it as it’s still in the planning stage but we have a vision to merge the notion of a search-type activity with a curated content experience.”

“We think the benefit to the consumer is huge. It removes the process of trial and error from clicking on search results and hitting ‘Back’ in the browser.”

The idea of providing context and information in search isn’t exactly a new idea, but it’s definitely going to be interesting to see how Lycos attacks this and what solution it offers, and perhaps even more interesting to see how they can compete with Google.

While Balazy says he doesn’t plan to compete with Google head on, he did say that Lycos will be focusing more on search queries that are important and matter to people, while really focusing on the presentation layer, making the user experience really intuitive and beautiful, and taking the same data-driven approach that Lycos is currently using on its homepage.

In an industry that is very difficult to break into, just look at the lack of success Bing has had and its product is actually good, I think this is going to be a tough road for Lycos, but I would like to wish them the best of luck. I’ll definitely look into their new search product once it launches.
