LogMeIn Drops Support for Free Accounts, Tells Users to Pay for Pro
If you’re one of the hundreds of thousands of people who rely on LogMeIn for remote access to your PC while on the go or at the office, things may have just taken a big change for you. LogMeIn has just announced that, effective immediately, the company will no longer be supporting their long existing LogMeIn Free program. The changes now require that customers purchase a potentially expensive LogMeIn Pro plan in order to continue using the service.
The basic LogMeIn Pro plan – advertised for “individuals” – provides users with access to just two computers from the web, from another PC, from your iOS device, or from an Android device. LogMeIn Pro does provide numerous features not previously available to LogMeIn Free users, including remote printing support as well as file management via the cloud. This will cost you a whopping $99 a year – a bitter pill to swallow for those who have been used to having access to most of that functionality for the low price of free.
LogMeIn also offers numerous other professional plans that gives you access to up to 10 computers remotely for up to $449 a year. LogMeIn claims that they have decided to undergo this change in order to meet the “evolving needs of our customers, we will be unifying our portfolio of free and premium remote access products into a paid-only offering.” For those unwilling to pay up for one of LogMeIn’s Pro plans, there are numerous free alternatives still available – my personal favorite being TeamViewer, which I personally switched to from LogMeIn Free some time ago. TeamViewer provides free remote access to multiple computers with file transfer support, totally free of charge for personal use.
