LG G4 Will Have an F1.8 Camera

LG will unveil its latest flagship smartphone, the G4, on April 28, and from what we’ve seen so far, it’ll be a doozy. On Tuesday, LG released a new video that definitively reveals one definite feature we’ll see in the new handset: an f/1.8 camera, which means it’ll be capable of some high quality photography.

Take a look at the video:

For comparison’s sake, the Samsung Galaxy S6’s camera has an aperture of f/1.9. Counterintuitively, the smaller the number that follows the “f,” the larger the lens opening—at least that’s what I’ve gleaned from this handy dandy webpage that tells me how to understand aperture values. Without knowing the megapixel capabilities of the camera itself, we can know that the LG G4’s aperture is more capable than that of the Galaxy S6—but only by a very small amount.

Meanwhile, LG published another video a few days earlier about the various new features added to its new smartphone OS, UX 4.0, which will show up in the G4 later this month:

UX 4.0 will include QSlide, LG’s single-screen multi-tasking feature, as well as Knock Code for easier screen unlocking. Smart Notice gives users activity and wardrobe suggestions depending on the weather forecast for the day. UX 4.0 will also offer Smart Bulletin and Quick Shot, the former for easier organization of dates and appointments and the latter for quicker camera snapping. It seems like LG is pushing its new camera pretty hard, and considering how much emphasis we tend to put on our smartphones’ photographic prowess every day, it’s not a bad strategy.

As we get closer to the April 28 reveal, I’m sure LG will continue to release more teasers in drips and drabs. The real question is this: how much will the G4 cost? And will it be affordable enough to unseat a newly restored Samsung with its Galaxy S6?
