LG Announces Chromebase, An All-in-One Desktop Running Chrome OS

Though most computers that run Google’s Chrome OS come in the form of affordable laptops, LG has decided to target a new demographic with their latest computer, the Chromebase.

Announced this morning by the company, the Chromebase is an all-in-one computer that runs Google’s minimalistic, web-focused operating system, and includes an unspecified Intel Celeron processor, 2GB of memory, and a 16GB solid state storage drive. All of this is packed into a 21.5-inch, 1080p IPS (in-plane switching) display, alongside an included keyboard, mouse, speakers, webcam, as well as necessary ports for USB devices and networking.

There’s also an HDMI input in the back, just in case you wanted an overly-functional extra monitor lying around.

LG notes in the press release accompanying the announcement that it anticipates the Chromebase to sell well to schools, hotels, call centers, and other businesses. The main draw of Chrome OS is that all of your data and files are stored in the cloud, so logging into any Chrome OS computer with your Google account would give you access to all your files instantly.

This makes these units swappable and interchangeable at nearly any time – no more worrying about salvaging failing hard drives. That is, so long as Google’s cloud stays up and running (which for the most part it tends to do).

LG didn’t deliver any details in the form of a release date or retail cost (or perhaps multi-unit business bundle deals), but they will be offering an extended look at the device in the next month or two.
