John Gruber Takes a Shot at Predicting Future iPhone Resolutions
If anyone on the planet can put together a decent theory regarding an Apple product, it’s John Gruber. In this case, Gruber has taken a look at two products — the dual iPhones we’re expecting to see next month — and worked up what he believes will be the display resolutions for those phones.
Working off of the assumption that the two phones will be 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches, Gruber believes that the resolutions will come in at 1334 x 750 and 2208 x 1242, respectively. That would put the 4.7-inch model at a pixel density of 326 PPI and the 5.5-inch version at an outrageous 461 PPI.
For some perspective, the current iPhone 5s is hitting 326 PPI. So the 4.7-inch iPhone would add just enough pixels to maintain that “Retina” level of pixel density, while its larger brother would go above and beyond, almost into a territory where consumers might not notice the improvement enough to appreciate it.
A surprising amount of legwork went into the above calculations — it’s not like Gruber just pulled those figures out of the air — and it’s worth reading the source post just so you can appreciate that fact. I couldn’t possibly summarize it all, nor would I want to. So go check it out.
We’re not far from the September 9 event that Apple has planned, and it’s at that event that we’re expecting to meet these next-generation iPhones. Larger iPhones (iPhablets, if you will) have been on the wish lists of many for a long time. If John’s predictions hold up, Apple fans won’t have to wish for much longer.
