IFTTT Now Works with Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect

I’m a big fan of Internet automation tool IFTTT (which stands for “If This, Then That”), and a recent update to the service adds integration with two other popular home automation products — the Nest Thermostat and the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detector.

The company announced support for Nest products in an email newsletter sent out to users last night.

Using the new triggers and actions enabled by the Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect, IFTTT users could, for instance, regulate their home’s temperature based on geolocation (as suggested by GigaOM writer Stacey Higginbotham). The Nest Protect integration can have IFTTT call you if a smoke alarm goes off in your home, or send you a text if the Protect’s battery is dying.

There are a lot of potential use cases here — you’re really limited by your imagination and the available services that IFTTT currently works with. Right now, IFTTT works with a lot of services.

The latest update to IFTTT also added support for some other services, including the GE+Quirky Aros air conditioner I covered a while back. So not only can you control a home heating system and central air if your home has it, but you can now control the Aros smart window A/C if your home isn’t quite that high tech.
