Here's One Good Reason We Should Just Stop Nitpicking the New Lightsaber Design

Wow. As I’m sure many of you know, the new Star Wars teaser trailer for Episode 7: The Force Awakens was released earlier today. So naturally, I watched it (ok, I lie, I watched it like 10 times). Regardless, the part of the trailer that got me the excited was when we are shown a cloaked figure stumbling down a snowy slope in a dark forest. The figure reaches the bottom, enters a defensive stance, and whips out a lightsaber that looks like a medieval claymore: a two-handed longsword with a crossguard.

And naturally, the Internet blew up with commentary about the new lightsaber design. Except, it seems like mostly everyone hates it. I’m not going to link to all the comments and articles, but here’s a few: TechCrunch, The Verge (also The Verge), and the countless quips on Twitter.

So many people nitpicking a completely fictional weapon. I don’t get it. This is a movie, it’s made for entertainment purposes. And in case you forgot creating a lightsaber isn’t possible (at least with current technology and what we know about physics), so if you are willing to go along with that then I don’t see how this modification should be a problem for anyone.
