Google Chromecast Now Supports Local File Playback, Podcasts, and Several More Apps
In a massive update to the Chromecast, Google’s small and simple in-home media streaming solution, several new features and application support have been added to the device.
The Chromecast now has streaming support for podcasts, Facebook photo galleries, and best of all, local file playback — a much-requested feature since the device’s surprise launch this summer. In terms of applications now supportive of the Chromecast, the list now welcomes Plex, RealPlayer cloud, Vevo, Viki, aVia, BeyondPod, PostTV, Songza, and RedbullTV.
Local file playback can be achieved through apps like Plex, RealPlayer Cloud, and aVia, and podcasts can be played from apps like BeyondPod (for Android) right on your television. And as the new owner of a Nexus 7 (which is a great device by the way), I couldn’t be happier to see support for BeyondPod, making listening to podcasts while house-cleaning an absolute breeze.
The full list of supported Chromecast apps is posted below. Now get to entertaining yourself with one, it is Wednesday, after all. And you’ve worked very hard this week.
