Finally! The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is Getting a Nintendo 3DS Remake
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is the remake I’ve been waiting years for. Ocarina of Time got one. The Wind Waker got one. Heck, even the universe of A Link to the Past was resurrected for A Link Between Worlds. But Majora’s Mask has always been passed over.
No more.
At a Nintendo Direct event yesterday, the company announced that The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask will indeed get its time to shine. The title will be re-released on the Nintendo 3DS and will get the same 3D treatment as Ocarina of Time did a few years back.
I’m sure this news will please a lot of people and will also disappoint a lot of people. Majora’s Mask is a polarizing title, adopting many of the mechanics of Ocarina of Time while adding a darker feel and some new twists, like the ever-present three-day countdown and the owl-powered save system.
Younger me enjoyed the game (though found some parts incredibly challenging), and I’ve tried to pick it up and play it again on the Wii Virtual Console; however, I didn’t particularly like the controls on that console. I’m hoping that Nintendo is able to stay as true as possible to the original’s great control on the Nintendo 3DS, which sports a wildly different button configuration. We’ll see how that goes.
As far as a release date goes, all we’re getting from Nintendo at this point is “Spring 2015.” That means we’re waiting at least four months to play the title, though my money is on a May release date similar to the one Mario Kart 8 received on the Wii U earlier this year. That game sold well in that slot; perhaps Nintendo is hoping The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask can do the same.
Thoughts on the game? Leave ’em below.
