Amazon Wants to Use Drones to Deliver Packages to Your Doorstep

Jeff Bezos just took an opportunity to reveal a brand new and perhaps radical way Amazon is planning to deliver packages to your home within the next 4 to 5 years.  During an interview with Charlie Rose on 60 Minutes Bezos showed off unmanned drones that are completely autonomous and can deliver small packages within a 10 mile radius of the Amazon fulfillment center.  It’s a pretty incredible idea and one that will allow Amazon to get orders to customers faster than ever before — within 30 minutes.

Obviously, the drones will only be able to deliver smaller packages, but this type of delivery technology will completely change the way we shop.  Amazon has long been working to figure out ways to get people their orders faster, the reason as to why that’s so important is clear: Amazon wants to be the place where you buy everything and in order to achieve that goal the company needs to eliminate the threat of someone being able to go to a store and purchase an identical product faster than it would take to get it from Amazon.

Some problems Amazon may face with these drones is getting FAA approval and also making sure they don’t land in trees or worse on someone’s head.  But these are all things that will be able to be worked out and resolved in time.  And that’s probably why Jeff Bezos seems very confident that you will be receiving a future order by Amazon’s own drone fleet: PrimeAir.

No specific details yet in terms of how much a drone delivered package will cost or if it will require you have an Amazon Prime membership.  We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
