Google Rolling Out Android 4.4.3 to Nexus Devices Next Week

If you’ve got a Nexus device – that includes the Nexus 4 and 5 smartphones and the Nexus 7 and 10 tablets – then you might want to keep your eyes peeled on May 23. A new report suggests that Google will start rolling out the latest version of Android to those Nexus-branded gadgets, meaning that the latest and greatest version of Google’s open source mobile OS will soon be out in the wild.

According to a post on Android Geeks, Android 4.4.3 KitKat will start getting beamed out a week from today. That news comes from “a source,” so take this with a grain of salt, obviously. As to what changes will be hitting with 4.4.3, the post links back to the leaked Android changelog posted on Myce. Apparently the newest iteration of KitKat will offer up better Bluetooth connectivity, support for the new, forthcoming version of Google TV (or Android TV, or whatever they’re calling it), as well as general bug fixes. In all, it should be everything you like about Android except, you know, better. Hopefully.

Meanwhile, the Android Geeks post also mentions that Google is likely to roll out the next version of Android at their I/O conference this summer. That’ll be known as “Lollipop,” following the company’s penchant for giving Android builds candy-themed codenames. When that OS rolls around, expect to see a whole slew of new devices touting the latest version of Android, with all the KitKat-powered devices suddenly being old news.

Let’s also not forget that Apple will likely be unveiling iOS 8 in a few short weeks at the WWDC event in early June. Overall, this summer should be chock full of new mobile operating systems, and people staring at their phones as they walk around in the sun. That’s how I like to spend my summer, at least.
