Talking tech since 2003

If you’ve been waiting for the Titanfall release to buy an Xbox One console, today is your lucky day. Microsoft just put up a pre-order page for a brand new Xbox One bundle that includes a free Titanfall digital download code. It’s the first time Microsoft has bundled a full title with its console in the United States, though it’s done so in other territories (FIFA 14 in the UK, for example).

titanfall-codeThe bundle will retail for the same $499 that Microsoft has charged for the Xbox One since its launch in November.

The disc-based version of Titanfall can be pre-ordered for $59.99, which is likely the price Microsoft will charge in the Xbox One’s digital game store. If you held off on the Xbox One for the first few months, you could wind up saving $60 on both the system and, arguably, its first blockbuster title.

Unfortunately, this particular package lacks the “limited edition” perks most are accustomed to with game/console bundles. The system is the same black console you could buy previously — no Titanfall graphics. The controller is also plain black. And we’ve seen nothing about exclusive downloadable content for the bundle, either. Don’t let the box fool you; this is the everyday Xbox One package with a Titanfall download code.

But the package still offers a good bit of value, and it serves as a sort of admission by Microsoft that gamers want more from a $499 purchase. With Sony’s PlayStation 4 racking up sales — 5.3 million as of February 8 — and Microsoft’s own console lagging behind by over a million, such a move could prevent the PS4 from establishing an even more sizable lead.

The new Titanfall bundle can be pre-ordered from both Microsoft and Amazon right now, and will release on the same day as the game itself: March 11. We’ll be covering the launch of Titanfall next month and will let you know where we stand on the game itself after we get some playtime in.

Until then, what are your thoughts on this new bundle?

UPDATE:

According to Game Informer, Microsoft is also discounting the Xbox One in the UK. The console will now sell at £399 instead of £429. In U.S. dollars, that’s a drop of about $49.
