Samsung to Launch Its Own Google Glass Version, Dubbed 'Gear Glass'
Samsung is reportedly going to release its own wearable technology to compete with Google Glass, according to a Tweet that surfaced this morning. Blogger Eldar Murtazin, who has a habit of leaking tech news that frequently comes true, tweeted that Samsung is in the works of making its own version of Google Glass:
Is it true? At this point, we cannot confirm, but Samsung does have a strong case for diving head first into the wearable technology space. Wearable technology, after all, is expected to climb to $30 billion by 2018, from almost $9 billion last year, according to analyst Shane Walker at IHS Global Insights. Samsung already has its foot in the wearable technology door, just recently releasing its smartwatch, Galaxy Gear, That product will join Google’s Glass and Apple’s rumored iWatch, which are also popularizing the field.
Still, a Samsung product that seamlessly integrates with its other products may be a boon for the company. Samsung already has the consumer base to introduce a product similar to Google Glass, as it currently holds the position of undisputed leader in the worldwide smartphone market, shipping more units at the end of the first quarter than Apple, LG, Huawei, and ZTE combined, according to IDC. A product that’s a natural extension of its already existing Samsung Galaxy smartphone and smartwatch, for example, could be packaged together and make an easy purchase decision for all the millions of customers who already use Samsung products.
If they are introducing this product, a name like Gear Glass will probably need to be changed (Galaxy Glass sounds better, but still rips off the “Glass” name), to avoid an obviously blatant rip off and potential legal issues. What do you think they should name it? Galaxy Eye, perhaps?
